Hold the Jaeger, Pacific Rim Sequel in Jeopardy

Dear Pacific Rim fans, cross your fingers and stay positive, because things are looking a little iffy on the sequel.

Earlier this month it was announced that filming has been pushed back…indefinitely. The original film premiered in 2013 from Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers, but the sequel changed distributors sometime in 2014 and Universal would release the picture in April 2017 which would then be pushed back to August of 2017. The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that the film falls somewhere in the mixup of the Godzilla and King Kong franchises. Just recently Universal handed over Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island to Warner Brothers which will kick off a three picture series involving Kong, a sequel to Godzilla and then a movie with the two pit against one another. The films will cost a lot of money with Kong estimated at upwards of $125 million, but the payout could be huge.

Pacific Rim had a budget of $190 million dollars and only made $101.8 million domestically, although it was an overall international success with an additional $309.2 million being made in other countries. Still, not a great turnout and questionable for a sequel.

However, director Guillermo del Toro insisted that the film is still being made. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.” Del Toro did confirm that he was looking to do a small film before filming began, but it hasn’t yet been approved by the studio. The director is currently doing the press rounds for the horror film Crimson Peak, which he also wrote. Peak will be released on October 16th and is already receiving praise from critics.

So there’s no official word yet, but it doesn’t look great. It’s not strange for big budget movies to get pushed back for better release weekends, but the longer the sequel gets held back the less likely it is that fans will get to see the return of the Jaegers.
