Game of Thrones: Episode Three Overview

Craster Knows Best

As the Night Watch journeys deeper into the North, we finally get closer to learning the terrors that lie beyond the wall. And it looks like Jon Snow is getting a first hand account of what has been taming the beasts in the North, and it looks like the disappearance of Craster’s boys has something to do with it. It seems that the boys have been used as sacrifices to the beasts and that’s why Craster’s family has managed to survive for so long. So, while he is still a creep, it looks like Craster has been doing his best to protect the lands.

“My son is fighting a war, not playing at one”

Lady Stark wastes no time in putting Renly Baratheon, who appears to be playing King, in his place, while her Robb Stark is actually fighting a war that should be his. Renly really needs to get his act together if he plans on actually becoming King, it seems he is letting his personal affairs get too mixed up in what he should actually be doing—vying for the Iron Throne. However, his wife seems to have her priorities in order, and while they maybe crazy at least she knows what she wants, and that is Renly’s baby in her stomach. Renly best decide what he wants soon, because kings are rising in every corner, and sides are being chosen.

“We are iron born…we take what is ours”

It looks like Theon Greyjoy has finally chosen his side in the war for the Iron Throne, even if its just because he has some past daddy issues and is looking for the approval he craves so much. How can you blame him though? His dad dubbed his sister a better warrior than him; if that’s not an ego bruiser than I don’t know what is. I wonder how Robb Stark is going to react when he realizes that his ally has abandoned him, and in the words of the Greyjoy family, “what is dead may never die”, and we will see how this holds up when Robb and Theon meet again.

“William’s horse got me to the wall, and I’ve been wearing black ever since”

We lost a good man in this weeks episode, Yoren, whose been watching over Arya as they make their way North. However, he went down as I hoped he would, fighting like a badass. Courtesy of Joffrey’s soldiers we also get one of the more disgusting images of the episode, a soldier knifing a wounded boy in the throat. Luckily, his death wasn’t a waste as Arya was quick on her feet and revealed him to be the boy with the bullhorn helmet. Arya better remain quick on her feet, because it doesn’t look like those soldiers are ready to let her or the other boys go anytime soon.

When you lose a character you gain one though, as the newest soldier Brienne of Tarth was introduced to the show, and I am very excited to see what becomes of her. What else did you like about this episode? Were you again blown away by Tyrion’s craftiness in finding the mole? Or brought to tears by Sansa’s struggles in the Lannister House?
