Dragon’s Dogma Vocation Tips: Warrior

Dragon’s Dogma was released in late May of 2012.  It has  been compared to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Shadow of the Colossus, Monster Hunter, and Devil May Cry.  It is an action rpg that follows the a character whom you create using the pretty detailed Character Creation interface, and their quest to slay the Dragon.  This will take you all across Gransys, with plenty of adventures and fun along the way.

The game is purely a single player experience.  However, each player creates a “pawn” that will follow them throughout their adventures.  They control this pawn’s development as well as its equipment and skills.  This brings forth the only real online interaction within the game.  A player is able to have three pawns in his party.  To get to three, the player is able to recruit pawns that other people have made.  These pawns aren’t taken away from the player who made them and the creator can receive items and rift crystals (which can be used to recruit higher level pawns) in return.

Each member of the party will have a vocation.  This vocation determines that character’s stat growth, skill set, and weapons.  For example, a mage will have low health, attack, and defense, though they will have high magic and magic defense.  While they will be able to use magic, they will not be able to use, say daggers and a bow like a strider or a sword and shield like a fighter.  There are nine vocations in total, though pawns can only become one of the first six.  Each vocations plays extremely different from the others, and out of all the ones I’ve played, they’ve all been enjoyable (though the ranger and warrior are my favorites).

This article will teach you how to use the warrior, who is able to strike many opponents at once with unmatched strength.  The warrior has the highest health growth of any vocation.  It also has very high attack and defense growth, though it has very low magic attack and defense growth.

The warrior wields either a two handed sword or warhammer.  These weapons are very heavy, but they have high attack, stagger, and knockdown stats.  A warrior’s strength comes from using these weapons against large groups of enemies mostly.  Warriors attacks have high resistance to knockdown and stagger, allowing them to deliver a hit despite taking a blow in the middle of it.  For this reason, warriors are stronger against smaller, weaker opponents.

When using a warrior, pick up bastion immediately.  This will add 50 points to your defense stat, which is very useful, especially early in the game.  They don’t have very many skills, or core skills, but they are very powerful ones.  Get whirlwind strike as soon as you can.  This move makes the user invulnerable to stagger and knockback while doing a lot of damage and setting up the opponent for a follow up attack.  The other ones you really want is Arc of Deliverance and Clout.  Clout increases your strength by 20%, while Arc of Deliverance is incredibly powerful, especially when paired with the Temerity and Audacity, which halve damage taken while mounting a focused strike and make you harder to knock down while mounting a focused strike (respectively).  This move takes a long time to charge up and isn’t effective against flying creatures.  It is mostly useful against boss creatures as it is a bit wasted against weaker enemies.  However, this is the most powerful attack in the game.  When fighting a Wyrm (An ice dragon) I had a fire enchanted weapon (His weakness) and used Arc of Deliverance on his heart.  I did over three health bars of damage.  If used correctly, this move can really make the warrior class.

Try to strike hard with the warrior class.  If you rush in and attack quickly, you can usually overwhelm the enemy before they have a chance to retaliate.  You do have to be careful of flying enemies and magic users however.  These enemies can cause a lot of damage to you if you aren’t careful.  Pawns can often prove useless against flying opponents, so be sure to be comfortable with using your jump attacks.  Good luck!
