District 9 Director Will Take On Alien
In a subtle, and seemingly unsure, Instagram announcement, Neill Blomkamp has confirmed that he is making an Alien movie. Blomkamp is best known for his films District 9, Elysium and the upcoming Chappie.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed very little about his upcoming project with Fox. “It did have to do with having Sigourney [Weaver] on Chappie.” Blomkamp started, “Those first two [Alien] films are probably my favorite films ever made.” Weaver will appear in Chappie as Michelle, a woman who wants to exterminate the young robot. According to TheWrap, the film will take place after the events of Prometheus 2, which will come to theaters March 4th, 2016. Blomkamp hardly reveals any details but says that it’s something he’s been working on since late 2014. He always wanted to make a film in the Alien universe and after working with Weaver he saw it come together. “When I talked to her about her experience making those films and what she thought about Ripley and everything else, it informed and changed the film I wanted to make into something different.” He kept tight-lipped and insisted that now is the time to focus on and promote Chappie, which comes out March 6th.
The film Alien originally came out in June of 1979 directed by Ridley Scott. The film was a massive success and earned an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Sequels Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection were released in 1986, 1992 and 1997, respectively. Since then we’ve seen two Alien versus Predator crossover films and the franchise was again resurrected when Scott directed a film in canon with the universe titled Prometheus in 2012. Also, a video game entitled Alien: Isolation found popularity this past year after being released in October. The survival horror game follows Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, through a decrepit space station as she tries to evade Aliens and find the flight recorder of the original Nostromo.
Clearly, the world isn’t done with Aliens.
