Carly’s Best TV Shows of 2014

Before we begin, I feel obligated to inform you that these are simply MY opinions. I know how fandoms get. There are some shows I couldn’t get into and some series I haven’t gotten around to. These were the ones that grabbed my attention, got me hooked, and left me wanting more.

5. The 100

I didn’t plan on enjoying The 100 from the CW. In fact, I knew I was going to hate the sad excuse for young adult, dystopian sci-fi. Almost a century after Earth was decimated by nuclear bombs, there is still hope, because floating around the planet in The Ark is the rest of mankind. Luckily, humanity remains pretty terrible and they’re willing to send away a hundred of their “expendable” under eighteen inmates to see if the Earth can be inhabited earlier than expected, since things on the ship aren’t going too well. Of course we want to watch one hundred attractive delinquent teens repopulate the Earth, because that’s what society needs! The series didn’t start off strong with its beautiful yet cliched characters, but over time the tension builds and you’re left with the incredibly delicious formula for a guilty pleasure. It still isn’t perfect, but I sense that the series is beginning to really find its groove and I can’t help but tune in.

4. Teen Wolf

I know what you’re thinking, but no, I am not a teenage girl. I know MTV’s Teen Wolf sounds silly, but if you’ve tuned in then you know it’s a great show. There are, of course, werewolves, but there are a ton of supernatural elements mixed in with detailed lore that seamlessly stitch storylines together. Originally, the series focused on Scott McCall, played by Tyler Posey, and his balance between becoming this thing he denied existed and trying to be cool in high school. Now, Scott is surrounded by people who know his secret, share his abilities, and are just trying to survive the paranormal events that flourish in the town of Beacon Hills. There are moments that are hilarious, terrifying, tear-worthy and thrilling. It’s a show about friendship and trying to pass math while dealing with a crazed demon that has possessed your best friend (skillfully acted by Dylan O’Brien).

3. Orphan Black

I still find it personally insulting that everyone isn’t watching this show. The series revolves around one woman’s discovery that she is one of many clones created by a secret agency. Tatiana Maslany is an incredible revelation and plays each of her approximately six main character clones with such poise and originality that it feels as if there are six different actresses. I can easily tell each clone apart by their mannerisms, accents and styles, so kudos! It’s shrouded in mystery and rarely dull, and if you’re not watching, then I don’t think we can be friends anymore.

2. The Walking Dead

I’ll be honest, I sort of checked out of AMC’s The Walking Dead during season four. It hit the season four slump where things were in a lull and I began to do other things as it was on. Season five premiered in October, and I was absolutely hooked. The new season is packed with action and while it should annoy me that the characters have been separated, it doesn’t because each storyline makes me care more about them than I have in seasons past. Carol and Tyreese walking around with some kids? Boring, right? Not even a little! I am so excited for the season to start back up on February 8th.

1. Game of Thrones

I wanted to be cool and have some real under-the-radar show at number one, but sometimes you can’t outdo the big guys. This season of HBO’s Game of Thrones was overwhelming in the sense that I was ridiculously entertained each episode. It’s a crime against humanity that they make audiences wait a year for the next season. As per usual, we loved and we lost, we cheered and we cried, but this season I felt everything more. The gravity of every situation and storyline delivered a chill up my spine and I talked about each episode throughout the week until the next one took my breath away and dominated conversation for the next week. Is it April 2015 yet?
