In the 1960s, Gerry Anderson sought to bring science fiction to all in a way that was fresh and inventive. By mixing epic tales and creative puppetry, Anderson brought this “supermarionation” to televisions everywhere. Some of his most popular series were Thunderbirds, Fireball XL5, and Captain Scarlet. His commitment to creating content and his determination to entertain was obvious until his death in 2012.
In honor of the tremendous legacy Anderson leaves the great world of science fiction, his son Jamie is looking to create a television series that brings his work to new generations. The show was previously picked up by a Japanese distributor that turned it into an anime series, straying from the concepts involved in its conception. Now, Jamie hopes to bring it back to its roots. Originally his father’s idea, Firestorm hopes to resurrect the beauty of his previous work with practical effects, physical sets, detailed miniatures and puppets. Jamie has set up a Kickstarter to create an episode to show investors what the final product will look like. The campaign reached it’s first goal in 96 hours and is now looking toward funding other ones pertaining to the pilot episode and beyond.
The story takes place in a not-so-dystopian 23rd century, wherein a terrorist group called Black Orchid threatens to disrupt the peaceful society Earth has worked so hard to sustain. Storm Force is formed to fight this disturbance. They soon discover that that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
The production boasts a list of respected and award-winning professionals who have worked with Gerry in the past, and are also passionate about carrying out his vision. It really feels like an extension of Gerry’s work. The concept art is intriguing and the attention to detail on the puppets is spectacular. It really is a passion project by those who appreciate and love Anderson’s work and are excited at the opportunity to spread the joy and new take on sci-fi to others.
