BOOK REVIEW: Chocolate Chocolate Moons

Science fiction and comedy are two genres that I love to twirl together. It’s a difficult balance to strike, which is why we don’t always hit gold. In her premiere novel, Chocolate Chocolate Moons, Jackie Kingon strives to unite mystery, sci-fi and fun.

The book begins to follow Molly Marbles, an overweight Earthling who wins a scholarship to attend Armstrong University on the Moon. She takes along her hefty boyfriend, Drew Barron, as well. Of course, as they move through college, things fall apart. Molly and Drew diverge on separate paths and we, perhaps a bit too quickly, are in their future where Molly is married with children and still her pleasant, pudgy self. Drew is now a hot shot model/executive after losing weight with some seriously questionable food supplements. The two intertwine once more when Molly begins to investigate the poisoning of her favorite candy.

Page after page is packed full of oddities. From names like Decibel Point and Billings Montana, to the misguided idea of history on Earth, the humor is aplenty. It’s definitely not a novel to be taken seriously. The puns can come a little hard and heavy, so I encourage you to enter with an open mind. The mystery is there, but it may be more enticing for a younger reader.

Kingon offers a fun view into what life may be like on the Moon or Mars. She mixes in bits of science for readers like how excited Molly is that her 287 Earth pounds drop to a mere 47.6 Moon pounds or the fact that some produce grows into an oblong shape due to gravity. The detail of what foods are offered or what type of activities people, and Martians, do is pretty hilarious. Comedy is definitely the glaring genre of the book and it gets carried out in a variety of ways in each chapter. Go in knowing this and you’ll more than likely enjoy yourself.

Chocolate Chocolate Moons is available over on Amazon and iTunes and offers an easy read for audiences of all ages.
