Cosplay is an open thing. Through it, all ages and genders and personalities can celebrate the nerdy things they love. And, at San Diego, in this year of 2017, many people did just that. It was a wide showing of different costumes at this year’s con and represented a lot of different spectrums of nerdy interests. And, if you ever wanted an easy test to see what some of the most popular franchises are right now, then look no further than the cosplaying that was going on in San Diego.
And, for this year, it’s a lot of superheroes. Marvel and D.C. both made a showing with plenty of fan favorites. It had The Joker (I’d argue no con is complete without at least one Clown Prince of Crime running around) and his lovely and crazy companion Harley Quinn, alongside plenty of Thors, Captain Americas, Batmans—of course—and more Deadpools than any single chimichanga stand could hope to feed. Wonder Woman, fresh off her amazing new movie, also walked the floors in various forms.
But, as we all know, nerds love much more than just super heroes and there were Star Wars characters around to bring the Force some representation and Halo’s and Overwatch’s characters both got their dues with some stunning and no doubt time-consuming-to-make costumes.
And that’s only scratching the surface: cosplay is big, it’s wide, and it’s a way for fans to show how much they appreciate the media that makes life brighter for everyone who has a spark of geekiness in them.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s a good time to be a nerd and that it’s a good time to be a cosplayer.
