Battlefront is Beautifully Average

It was the release that people had been waiting for. With heaps of hype and enormous expectations, could it deliver?

Yes, Star Wars Battlefront took off on Tuesday, November 17th for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. When it was announced fans were ecstatic that the Battlefront series would be getting a fresh reboot courtesy of the team over at DICE and EA. Factor in the major excitement for the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens and you’ve got a title that’s almost a guaranteed market hit. In fact, after the outstanding turnout for the beta where 9.5 million users turned up to play just a snippet of the game EA expects to sell 13 million copies by the end of their fiscal year in March 2016. That’s a lot of games.

What might slightly hinder those numbers is the incoming reviews saying it’s less than stellar. It’s a beautiful game that is plagued by repetition. It’s a fan’s dream to land on familiar planets like Hoth and Tatooine, but the gameplay isn’t enough to keep me coming back. For the first few hours, I was enthralled playing alongside my favorite characters, but the novelty wore off even for a diehard fan like myself.

As a personal opinion, I was immediately disappointed when I found out there was no campaign. There’s a few co-op missions available, but the need to replay them isn’t there. I loved seeing my favorite places from the universe come alive on my screen, but no space exploration bummed me out. The game was much like opening a new toy when you’re young, it’s immediately your favorite thing in the world, then you play with it for a week and leave it in a corner for the next year.

I have to stress that Battlefront is not a bad game by any means, but it’s not enough to compete with other titles this holiday season. It’s one of those things that was affected by the hype and was spread too thin, but if you’re a fan then you’ve got to try it. It will still sell outrageously well and there is hope for the future. The first downloadable content is the Battle of Jakku, which is available the beginning of December and will feature two new maps on the planet Jakku and will precede the events of The Force Awakens just in time.

Are you still on the Battlefront bandwagon?
