Agents of SHIELD Episode 8: The Well

Last Week on Agents of SHIELD…

The team travels to a SHIELD base called the Hub, where Ward and Fitz are sent off on a classified mission. The rest of the team goes to save them when it becomes apparent there will not be any help for them in the likely possibility that something goes wrong.

Now…

The team does some clean-up in London as a result of the events shown in Thor: The Dark World. Things get hairy when they discover a staff filled with Asgardian technology that imbues any holders with unlimited power, and rage too.

I wish I could like this show, I really do. It’s not fun not to like something, especially when it has to do with the ambitious (if clearly bottom-line dependent) world that Marvel Studios has been building over the past five years. It’s just that, to put it simply, I’ve come to the conclusion that this show is woefully mediocre. It has a lot of things going for it, sure, but nothing really clicks along the way. Even in an episode that further connects the show to its cinematic universe at large, the show’s almost troubling need to repeat formula in uninspired ways makes most every episode feel the same (with the exception of the second and sixth episodes, respectively). There are flourishes each week that always shows promise, but it’s usually been bludgeoned to death by the end through an annoying amount of exchanges featuring Skye or plots featuring things we’ve already seen before in the movies dealt with in such a way that feel like diminishing returns. Despite the fact that it’s always interesting to see things like the crew clean up the colossal mess that characters like Thor leave in their wake (something that would make for an excellent comedy sketch, if it hasn’t already), but it never makes for interesting television as a whole.
