A Tale of Two Tattoos

I am pleased to wear my heart on my sleeve and my passions on my skin. To be totally honest, I don’t thoroughly recall getting a lightsaber tattooed on my index finger, but I am happy it’s there. They say drunk words are sober thoughts, so maybe instead of getting sloppy when drunk, I just get really nerdy.

I always wanted a lightsaber tattoo on my finger. There are a menagerie of reasons but the main one was that I got to do the sound effect whenever I pointed at something or scolded someone. I never thought I would get it, and I definitely never suspected to talk three of my girl friends into getting it either. Yet here we are, three years later. Some of the tattoos have held up better than others. One has actually been removed by lasers, and a Doctor.

The interesting thing about the tattoo is the conversation it strikes up. Some people ask what it is. Other people say it’s awesome. Most quiz me on facts from the franchise. Some call me a poser. It’s a lot of mixed emotions. Periodically, I have to defend myself as a fan and prove that I deserve to wear this symbol of iconography.

I don’t write this to confront Star Wars fans or stir the pot, but I do find it quite interesting that I get such a different reaction from the fan base represented just six inches below the lightsaber.

I’ve got the symbol for the Deathly Hallows on the side of my wrist. Maybe a little more visible, and certainly met with better reception. I never get asked about potion recipes or abstract character questions, but with a “ZOMG I LOVE HARRY POTTER!” Which is great! Instantly, we are bonded by a genuine joy we feel when we see something representative of our shared passion.

So this isn’t meant to be judgemental, but more of a topic of conversation. Do you have “geeky” tattoos? What are some of the comments you get? Seriously, holler at me. I want to know.
