Sure, we have the iPhone 4S, 3D Television and Xbox Kinect, but where are the flying cars, teleportation devices, or robot helpers? The classic television series The Jetsons predicted a button pushing lifestyle by 2062, where everything you needed was at your very fingertips. Whether its instant food, access to your flying car, or traveling from one place to another, all you needed to do was push a few buttons. It’s already 2012, and lets face it, such advanced technologies are far from being realized. Yet, there is never any harm in continuing to dream or hope! So what inventions have we admired that have yet to be transformed from fantasy into reality? Let us take a look at 10 inventions that we have been anticipating, on a less serious note, would just be cool to have.
Flying Cars
Read about them in books, seen them in countless movies. But where are they? As cliché as the concept is, flying cars often arise as one of the most common future technological advances. As seen in movies such as The Fifth Element or Star Wars, it would definitely be a change of scenery to be hovering off the ground to get to your destination.
Food Particlizer
As society advances towards the birth of more modern inventions, how much manual work is still required by each individual? Will we head towards an era of inactivity and obesity much like WALL-E’s prediction? Well, the food particlizer certainly illustrates the effortless means of cooking, dismissing the necessity of cooking documentaries or even recipes. As lazy as it may sound, watching any food you desire manifest before your eyes in mere seconds would definitely be cool to watch, especially for the hungry.
Teleportation
Beam me up, Scotty. One of the most ideal ways of travel, you would be in your desired destination anywhere across the world in just a few seconds. Although human teleportation will not be achieved in this lifetime or the next, it still doesn’t hurt to continue dreaming.
Robot Assistant
You wouldn’t have to rely on mom, dad, or even on yourself anymore to complete those arduous chores around the house. We’ve seen robots in cartoons and some that already exist today, despite the need for further tweaking. The robot assistant may be a cliché invention but lets face it, R2D2 in the flesh? Heck yeah.
Holodeck
Computer, simulate. If you had the opportunity to create any setting you desire, what would it be? The Holodeck in the Star Trek series demonstrates the usefulness of such a deck, may it be to train or used for recreational purposes. Here’s a chance to consciously move freely through your ideal world!
Tube Travel
Teleportation may already offer a better mode of transportation, but it’ll still be cool to whiz in between buildings and streets to get to wherever you’re heading. As seen in Futurama or The Jetsons, your travelling experience will certainly be much more scenic compared to instant teleportation. Hey, it’s a second option right?
Time Machines
Imagine seeing an actual dinosaur before your eyes, or skipping to the future to see if you landed that job you’ve dreamed about since you were a child. Despite the risks of changing history or the fates of others, time travel offers an undeniable myriad of possibilities. Though such a creation can never be made – as we are living in the future right now – I’m sure you wished that you could take a step back through time. In the words of H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, “Man … can go up against gravitation in a balloon, and why should he not hope that ultimately he may be able to stop or accelerate his drift along the Time-Dimension, or even turn about and travel the other way.”
Iron Man Suit
Its portable, practically impenetrable, and you can fly anywhere across the nation. We’ve seen Tony Stark’s amazing invention come to life in the Iron Man series, and lets be honest, you would like to try on that suit just as much as I do. From the cool gadgets to the sleek way it looks, who wouldn’t want to be a superhero from time to time?
Shrink-Ray
Imagine shrinking yourself to look for that missing item that’s bugged you for so long or to hide from scary in-laws. Yep, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids definitely made some of us wish that a shrink-ray did exist. But just make sure you tell your roommates first and keep the pets outside for a little bit.
Inception PASIV Dream Machine
In Inception, we are briefly told that PASIV was created by the military to enhance the training of soldiers without risking lives. But just imagine living in the dream world that you have always fantasized about and even sharing it with your friends. A word of warning though, don’t forget to stick to very minimal layers, or you may never get out…
Realistic? Not really.
