2012 Movie Review-Recipe for Disaster

2012: Recipe for Disaster

Premise:
About a thousand years ago the Mayan Priests calculated that in the year 2012 the nine planets of our solar system would fall into conjunction (line up in orbit) and this would cause the Earth to be destroyed. As the fateful date approaches Earth scientists scramble to find answers to the problem while the governments begin the selection of those eligible to take a place in survival shelters built by the government.

What´s Good:
Director Roland Emmerich is no stranger to disaster movies. With such box office successes as Independance Day, and The Day After Tommorrow, viewers have the right to expect quality work, and 2012 delivers. Although typical of the genre, this movie takes disaster to the ultimate and the visual effects are absolutely wonderful. Casting Danny Glover as President of the United States was inspired. It has to be the first time we had a President whose campaign slogan was “I´m too old for this shit”. This movie is loaded with talent like John Cusack, new comer Chiwetel Ejiotor, Amanda Peete, Oliver Platt, and Woody Harrelson.

The Not So Good:
Even with a truck load of high priced, talented actors and an excellent director working in his venue, visual thrills just aren´t enough to pull turn this film into another Independance Day. The scope of a movie like this is huge and, at over 2 hours long it needed a much stronger scripe to rise above the mediocre. Talented actors can only do so much. Visual thrills alone can seldom make a film but lack of a strong script can certainly break one.

Overall:
Disaster movie fans will absolutely love this movie. With a box office at $138 million it has shown a decent success. If  you are looking for visual thrills then 2012 is your movie of the year, if not the decade. If you are looking for an Oscar winner, look elsewhere.
