Under the Dome: Season Two, Episode Four – “Revelation”

First aired July 21st, 2014.

After estimating that the food supply will only last another week, Rebecca (played by Karla Crome) puts “Operation: Mass Murder” into effect. Of course, no killing spree would be complete without the resident butcher of Chester’s Mill, Big Jim (played by Dean Norris).

Rebecca mixes swine flu with influenza to create a virus with the intention of infecting a fourth of the town, the idea being that the strongest citizens will survive and the weakest will die (it’s Darwinian, apparently). They take samples of the virus to mix into the holy water at the church and the diner’s drinking water, but Julia (played by Rachelle Lefevere) is hot on their trail. When the virus turns out to be stronger than intended, Rebecca aborts her plan because she doesn’t want to kill more people than necessary. Julia still has her and Big Jim arrested, although not before Jim reminds her that Barbie (played by Mike Vogel) also agreed to the idea.

It’s such a cop out for Rebecca not to have gone through with her plan after it was built up over several episodes. The woman was willing to kill a mother and her newborn baby, so there’s no way she wouldn’t try this again. I really hope this plot is revisited later in the season, otherwise it was a complete waste of buildup. I’m curious to see how people will react to Big Jim when they find out he was planning a mass murder with a psycho science teacher. I don’t see him talking his way out of this one, and it looks like he’ll take Barbie down with him.

Barbie, meanwhile, has been working with Joe (played by Colin Ford) and Norrie (played by Mackenzie Lintz) to learn the backstory behind Melanie, a.k.a. Mystery Girl (played by Grace Cox). Looking through old newspaper articles, they find out that Melanie disappeared twenty-five years ago and her old house is near where the mini dome (and the egg) first appeared last season. When they go to where it was, Melanie has flashbacks of finding a meteorite containing another egg. The meteorite opened after she and her friends Sam (played by Eddie Cahill), Pauline (played by Sherry Stringfield), who is also Junior’s (played by Alexander Koch) mother, and Lyle (played by Dwight Yoakam) put their hands on the glowing hand prints (déjà vu?). When Melanie tried to take the egg, Sam accidentally killed her, and claw marks on his chest indicate to the audience that he was the one who murdered Angie (played by Britt Robertson).

It looks like my theory about Melanie being a representation of whoever created the dome was wrong, however it is obvious that the dome brought her back to life. It might have been done so that she could replace Angie as the fourth in the new dome group, but since Angie died after Melanie came back that would mean the dome knew she would be murdered. The mysterious secret between Sam and Lyle has been revealed and it raises more questions, the biggest being why there wasn’t a dome years ago with the first egg. Sam is clearly more of a psychopath than he previously let on (although that’s not saying much in this town). I think it might be possible that he killed Angie after mistaking her for Melanie in the dark and that the whole locker thing is a major red herring.

Junior took the religious-crazed Lyle out of jail to get some answers as to why his mother faked her suicide. Lyle showed him postcards Pauline sent to him, each with paintings of different events that have happened inside the dome (butterflies, the rain). She knew the dome would be coming and thought if she left town it would follow her and Junior would be safe. Junior and Lyle go searching for Pauline’s journal but Lyle knocks him out after they find it and escapes. That should teach Junior to let crazy people out of their jail cells.

I’ve been trying to figure out how Pauline knew about what would happen inside the dome years before it appeared. The best I can figure is that she’s somehow connected to whoever brought down the dome. However, since Pauline is outside of the actual dome, I have a feeling it’ll be a while before we see her again and find out the answers.

Quotes & Thoughts

“This might sound kind of personal but do you have probe marks?”

If you were wondering which came first, the dome or the egg, the answer is the egg.

“How am I supposed to compete with a girl he thinks is from a galaxy far far away?”

Sam is the second man and murderer Julia has invited into her home. The lady doesn’t have the best taste in men.
