It’s been over five years since the original NBC series Heroes ended and fans have been waiting since February to get more details. The show’s resurrection was announced during the 2015 Super Bowl with a brief television spot, but just recently a trailer was released introducing new characters.
Tim Kring, original creator, will return to the series as executive producer as well as a few former cast members like Masi Oka, Greg Grunberg and Sendhil Ramamurthy. The show will focus on a fresh batch of new stars who are in the early stages of discovering their powers after a terrorist attack on Odessa, Texas. People with extraordinary abilities have been blamed for the attack and now they must live in the shadows. The new heroes will have to band together to understand their abilities and save the world.
It’s a shame that the original cast isn’t able to return. The first season of Heroes really was some of the most interesting content on television at the time. It premiered in 2006, a year after the first installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Batman Begins, so the superhero trend was just beginning to pick up and there was a fresh appeal for the audience. The second season suffered from a series of unfortunate events spanning from the WGA writers’ strike to creative differences between NBC and production staff and in the end the show never recovered and Kring’s original idea for the overall series never really came to fruition. It seems to me that with the over-saturation of better known heroes, audiences may not be willing to put in the time to learn about characters whose origins are a mystery.
However, Heroes Reborn isn’t necessarily doomed. We’ve seen a limited amount of footage besides the trailer, but preceding the series there will be a web series which will acquaint audiences with the new crew. New actors included are Once Upon a Time’s resident Peter Pan, Robbie Kay, and nerd idol Zachary Levi. Also being released are character posters like these of actor Ryan Guzman, who will be playing a former soldier named Carlos, and Francesca Eastwood playing the mysterious Molly.
