TRAILER TALK: 10 Cloverfield Lane

Before the horror genre was inundated with “found footage” there was a film in 2008 that did it right. In 2008, director Matt Reeves delivered Cloverfield. The mega-motion flick was written by Daredevil adapter Drew Goddard and produced by J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions. The movie begins with a normal day in New York when a going away party happens to be interrupted by a giant monster trying to engulf the city. Angles were intentionally bad, sounds were horrific and the atmosphere was constantly tense. It’s one you have to see, and possibly take Dramamine beforehand.

Shockingly, a trailer for what Abrams is referring to as a “blood relative” to Cloverfield was just released.

The film, entitled 10 Cloverfield Lane, is obviously not found footage but it’s also not clear how it’s related. Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as a woman who has been taken in by John Goodman and John Gallagher, Jr. after a car accident left her unconscious. Winstead learns that they reside in a bunker after a chemical attack has completely devastated the outside world and she’s left questioning what is and isn’t real.

The film is produced by Bad Robot Productions but doesn’t boast the previous big names. The script was written by newcomers Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken for a film called, The Cellar. Now most of what is known about the film comes from this Reddit post, which also states that the film went into production as Valencia but was left abandoned when Paramount’s Insurge division closed down. The script then went threw a few rewrites to become connected to the Cloverfield universe and voila, you get 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Aside from all the speculation, rumors and confusion, you can make up your mind about the film when it’s released on March 11th, 2015.
