The Walking Dead: “Not Tomorrow Yet” (Alexandria 1, Saviors 0)

First Aired March 6th, 2016.

Carol (played by Melissa McBride) is shown collecting and baking acorns and other things into cookies and delivering them to people around Alexandria. Morgan (played by Lennie James) is curious why she hasn’t told anyone about their fight but Carol just wants to forget it happened.

Rick (played by Andrew Lincoln) and the others return with supplies and gather everyone for a meeting in the church about taking on Negan and the Saviors. Morgan wants to talk to the Saviors and intimidate them into leaving Alexandria alone but Rick is adamant they have to be killed. Carol shares an intimate moment with Tobin (played by Jason Douglas) the night before the attack and their feelings for each other become apparent. Abraham (played by Michael Cudlitz) leaves Rosita (played by Christian Serratos) and it leaves her devastated. Tara (played by Alanna Masterson) tells Denise (played by Merritt Weaver) she loves her in case something happens. The next day Rick leads a group out onto the road to set up checkpoints along the way to Negan’s compound. They look for walkers in order to take the head of one and pass it off as Gregory (played by Xander Berkeley) as a Trojan horse to get inside.

Turns out Carol isn’t as cold as she tries to come off as, she just expresses her maternal loving instincts into cooking for everyone. Although Carol lost her child, she will always be a mother and it’s shown by how much she cares for everyone in Alexandria, living or dead. She’s also the last person I’d expect to cover for Morgan’s latest mistake. Nobody really takes him seriously anymore (nobody acknowledged his idiotic plan to talk to the Saviors). All those scenes of people breaking up and making up; I was sure at least one of those people would be dead by the episode’s end. What better way to stir up drama then for Denise to never get the chance to tell Tara she loves her? I was hoping to at least see Abraham get hurt after the harsh way he dumped Rosita; he made it seem like he was with her just because she may have been the last woman on earth.

That night, they use the ruse to kill two of the guards and rescue the man the Saviors captured from Hilltop. Rick leads everyone into the compound and they quietly kill anyone they find as they sleep while searching for the armory. Outside Tara confesses to Father Gabriel (played by Seth Gilliam) that she told Denise she loved her to cover up that she’d done this kind of thing before. Abraham and Sasha (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) find the armory but someone catches them and trips the alarm. Soon a large scale battle erupts and everyone scrambles to kill as many Saviors as they can. Aaron (played by Ross Marquand) and Gabriel each kill someone for the first time, with Gabriel reciting short prayer before shooting down a Savior.

The fight was just as grisly and gnarly as expected. People looked uncomfortable killing others in their sleep but once the Saviors started fighting back they missed the sleeping targets. I am surprised nobody died though because the narrative suggested as much: when Tara had her confession with Gabriel I was certain she was done for. And check out Gabriel channeling his inner Jules Winfield with that prayer. He’s starting to grow on me a little. I am disappointed that once again there is no sign of Negan. How many of his Saviors do Rick and company have to kill before he decides to step in and take action?

Day breaks and everyone regroups outside and celebrates their victory. However a man on a motorcycle nearly escapes before he is shot down and captured. Rick holds him at gunpoint when a woman over a walkie warns the group to lower their weapons and says they’ve captured Carol and Maggie (played by Lauren Cohan). You just knew that was way too easy, and this raises the question of just how big Negan’s network of Saviors runs. He’ll obviously know about Alexandria now and this time Negan is sure to bring the fight to them. In the meantime we have this hostage situation to keep us busy next week. I wonder whose time will potentially be up.

These Saviors have a very dark sense of humor, they might be fun to hang out with if they weren’t complete psychopaths.

Carol’s idea of a diary is keeping a tab on everyone she ever killed. The way she’s going, Carol will need another book soon.
