The New Ghostbusters

With a new Ghostbusters chapter on the horizon, there’s a lot of chatting in Hollywood. Paul Feig is in final talks to direct and his past projects specializing in female casts have speculation coming from every which way. Will there be an all-female Ghostbusters team? One person, and really the most important, seems to be very behind it. Bill Murray, who played Dr. Peter Venkman in the original film, seems excited about the idea. Even though he doesn’t want to appear in the film, he gave his opinions on casting decisions.

Murray said he thought Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig would make great Ghostbusters. The two previously worked together on Bridesmaids directed by Feig. “I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot.” Murray added. “And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”

So there are four terrific actresses for consideration, but who else could fill these proton packs? I like the idea of McCarthy and Wiig, because they are a proven dynamic duo. In my ideal reimagination, the pair say goodbye to two retiring members of the team. It’s a great opportunity for an Ernie Hudson cameo, or Murray, should he change his mind about appearing in the film, and a dash of Betty White, who I would prefer to see in every movie. Then there is an audition process with another opportunity to spotlight some great cameos, and two younger women are chosen. Maybe Jenny Slate and Anna Kendrick? Or Rebel Wilson and Emma Stone? Aubrey Plaza and Lena Dunham? Then there’s Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling, all of whom would do well.

The original Ghostbusters was released in 1984 and its sequel, Ghostbusters II, in 1989. Dan Aykroyd, writer and actor of the franchise, wants to create a universe out of Ghostbusters. “It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show.” Aykroyd said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?” He then added, “That’s what we have to do. The whole vehicle of Ghostbusters has to be rebuilt. That’s the ambitious thinking that’s going on now.”
