The Magnus Protocol Reviews: “Eliminations”

“Eliminations” Circles Back To A Strong Plot Point

“Eliminations” is exactly what I wanted. In my article for “Peer Review,” I said I would like to please check in on Sam, and this over-delivered. We get a whole episode set over in The Magnus Archives world.

Though, it surprisingly doesn’t answer that many questions. It doesn’t introduce much in the way of new information. We already knew from last time that The Dread Powers left stuff behind and that it’s heavily guarded. I think the only big reveal is the “Archivist” (it’s still not clear who they are exactly) is way more brutal to people who have been in Domains. I assume because there’s a lot more fear to suck out.

But I loved it all the same. Hearing Georgie synch up Sam’s events based on small details is just satisfying. The voice acting is so well done. The second “Hilltop” as a name is mentioned, you can almost hear the thoughts churning. I really enjoyed the reincorporation of things like tape recorders and people being forced to give statements.

“Eliminations” Is A Such A Treat For Magnus Fans

“Eliminations” also has a really strong statement within it. The Slaughter doesn’t have the best episodes, in my opinion (except stuff like “Grifter’s Bone”), but this is such a scary, psychological take on it. A simple scenario evokes both the fragility of life and a person’s capacity for violence and then twists things in a way that left me thinking about the other people in that cave. We know that Domains generate fake people to keep up the illusion, so I’m curious if the first people to crawl forward were ever people. I’m curious what everyone was thinking in those horrible, quiet moments. And, as the final sting of body horror for an already disturbing statement, I wonder if those injuries were allowed to heal.

And that level of detail, that level of worldbuilding, while being horrifying, is exactly why I love Magnus stuff. More episodes like “Eliminations,” please.
