Star Trek Reboot Only Flies Online

Are your feet cold? No worries! It appears reboots are everywhere!

It appears that a couple of successful films couldn’t satiate the hunger that fans of Star Trek felt, so CBS took it upon themselves to reboot the classic television series and launch it in 2017. For those who crave more of a slow burn like the classics as opposed to the fast paced action of the films then perhaps this version will be more your speed.

Currently, not much is known about the upcoming series. What we do know is that co-writer for both 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer. No word on if J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot will be involved. There are currently no writers or actors attached.

The controversial bit of information is that the series, as of now, will not actually air on television. Yes, CBS will produce the series for its own streaming service, CBS All Access. It’s a risky move. CBS is home to some of the biggest shows on television, but it hardly has the weight to throw into its own streaming service like HBO did with HBO Go. In fact, it’s hard to imagine CBS could compete with a variety of services with just their own programming. All Access will only run you about $5.99 per month, but is it worth tacking on your monthly expenses when Netflix, Hulu and Amazon and others offer much more content?

As a personal opinion, I don’t expect CBS to follow through with their plans to keep Star Trek on All Access. I understand that they’ve seen how well HBO Go worked, but a reboot of an older and yet unproven classic is unlikely to bring in a massive audience when the show is expected to premiere in 2017.
