With Halloween right around the corner, I always find it necessary to watch some movies that put me in the spirit of the holiday and one of my favorites is Sleepy Hollow, starring Johnny Depp. It is a fun reimagining of the familiar tale by Washington Irving. Depp plays Constable Crane, a New York detective trying to establish the concept of modern day forensics in 1799, a time when the authorities would much rather throw people in jail with as little fuss as possible. However, those same authorities decide to put Crane’s ideas to the test when they send him to Sleepy Hollow to uncover the person behind three gruesome murders and bring the guilty party back to New York for justice. Upon arrival, Crane quickly learns that the murders are not quite so straightforward and that he must pit his sense and reason against unearthly forces.

In classic Tim Burton style, the atmosphere just sings of Halloween with beautifully placed pumpkins, twisted trees, fall leaves, witches, and dramatic fog. But what’s especially fun with this movie is how it blends the new ideas while seamlessly paying homage to the original, such as with the iconic throwing of the burning pumpkin by the headless horseman.

Depp also puts in a great performance as the brave, yet squeamish Ichabod Crane, providing entertaining moments of comic relief among the dark tones of the movie. Along with a sprinkling of romance, gorgeous costumes by Colleen Atwood, and an unexpected, yet perfect performance by Christopher Walken as the Hessian soldier, Sleepy Hollow is a must see every Halloween, but remember to hold onto your head!
