Disaster Movie or Movie Disaster?

Ah yes disaster movies, the kind that makes you think what you would do if a big band of rocks was coming your way, and not in the musical sense. Here you’ll find some of the best in disaster movies, as ever with a top 5 obviously, there will have been films scratched out of the list, but rest assured if you want disaster on your screens you’ve come to the right place.

5) Deep Impact – Robert Duvall, Tia Leoni star in a film that’s on the brink of an apocalypse, as a comet heads for earth, some old, but interesting, conflicting interactions from the actors, making sure their goodbyes are sincere and heal any “unattended wounds.”

4) Armageddon – Not unlike Deep Impact in that another comet is threatening the world, (honestly comets ruin everyone’s fun!) This is from the notable producing works of Jerry Bruckheimer, in this, his developed a film that, if you watched today you’d give a solid nod of approval, but probably won’t live long in the memory as much as other films. Some strong effects, from director Michael Bay who’s more recent work involves giant alien robots fighting one another, so all in all out-dated but certainly worth a watch.

3) Day After Tomorrow – Some fantastic effects and interesting acting, the stories magnitude and tension is done very well and is believable in parts. One of my favorite scenes is the build up to the ship just outside, the building their housed in. The effects capture the soulless ship with some eerie impact. Its meaningful attention to global warming is a scare in itself, some scientists have even said that such climate effects seen here, are not entirely out of context and could indeed happen if we continue our habits. So let’s start turning off that standby TV from the main socket.

2) Independence Day – Truly impacting for it’s time, but out-dated by better effects and stories from other movies. Action, aliens, cheesy lines and special effects that still has staying power for any viewer. The director is remembered for this almost every time he brings out a new film.

1) Jurassic Park – Though not seen as a conventional disaster movie, such as The Poseidon Adventure or War of the Worlds, it certainly does have the elements, where everything that can go wrong, does. I would advise anyone who is on the brink of a scientific breakthrough in cloning dinosaurs, not to go through with that scientific breakthrough, limits the risk, so sorted! Who wants a pet raptor anyway?
