Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’: Now Officially the Beginning of a Trilogy

Tolkien fans, rejoice! Director Peter Jackson has finally revealed the latest update surrounding his upcoming flick, ‘The Hobbit’ and confirmed that it will indeed be apart of an exciting trilogy. On July 30th, the New Zealand filmmaker posted the following details on Facebook:

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life.  All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.’

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance.  The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, “a tale that grew in the telling.”

 Cheers,

 Peter J

As the prelude to “The Lord of the Rings” series, this epic novel that was originally published in 1937 will permit us to follow the adventures of feisty hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he sets off towards the Lonely Mountain in search for magnificent treasures guarded by the menacing dragon, Smaug. Alongside Gandalf and a team of dwarves, the storyline will guarantee to keep you engaged and entertained. From goblins and wargs to giant spiders and a climactic battle that will wrap up the trilogy perfectly, there is no question that Jackson’s decision to split this flick into three parts was wise. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will hit the big screen come December 14, 2012 while its following successors will be released in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Be sure to check out the trailer below to get a sneak peak of what’s in store for you.

A constant tumblr junkie ever since I created an account a couple of weeks ago. I'm an avid movie-goer, read a variety of books when I have the time and watch a range of television programs. Being the child of a father who owns more than 900 star wars/star trek and other sci-fi novels combined, as well as growing up alongside a brother who taught me to play video games since i was 8, its definitely hard NOT to love these genres.
