No Mans Sky Is No Joke

The upcoming game for Windows and PS4, No Man’s Sky, is big. Now it might be too big in two ways.

The hype surrounding the vast open universe from Hello Games is massive. Originally announced in 2013, No Man’s Sky has been abuzz ever since. The game was  hugely successful at E3 2014 winning Best Original as well as Best Indie Game and sites like Kotaku and The Verge are raving about their brief interaction with Sky. You know what else was highly anticipated? Bungie’s Destiny, and that didn’t go as well as planned.

However, Sky is meant to be just an open universe. That’s even putting lightly. The game is meant to be hundreds of open universes. Planets will generate procedurally, meaning at random, and will each offer different biological features. The lack of narrative story could be seen as a positive for those gamers who want to do their own thing or a negative for those who like to have specific goals set.

Players will be given one gun, one ship and one suit in the beginning and will work to upgrade these items as they play. The player has the option to share their discoveries with friends or keep their otherworldly findings to themselves. You’ll need friends to help you discover all the game has to offer since developers have said that to uncover all the content it would take you over 500 billion years. I don’t have that kind of time, and I like to see it all.

I’m hesitant, but excited. Open worlds intrigue me, but I don’t know if the thrill of discovery is enough to keep me coming back each day for more. I like the new approach that Hello Games is taking and I admire the scale they are aiming for, but I really hope they deliver something that makes me refuse to put my controller down.
