Mockingjay 2 Is an Action-Packed Bummer

0

By Carly Fjeld on November 26th, 2015

It feels as though it can’t be real, but The Hunger Games are coming to a close. The most recent and final installment, Mockingjay – Part 2, hit theaters over the weekend and fans flocked to see their favorites grace the big screen one last time. Part 2 is the action-packed final chapter in the young adult series where our heroine, Katniss, must stand up to the Capitol once and for all.

After a traumatizing run in with Peeta, Katniss is beginning to return to her normal self. She’s thrown amidst the chaos of war and is having a hard time committing to her role as she does not take casualties of war lightly. She is soon taken hostage by a poorly treated refugee and when he asks her to tell him why he shouldn’t shoot her, Katniss herself can’t offer up any objections. In fact, she says she would welcome the bullet.

The scene affirms that the dark cloud hanging over the film is here to stay. We don’t get the lovable team of Peeta and Katniss, but the broken duo that a troubled and violent past has turned them into. It’s actually refreshing for a young adult series, but it doesn’t make it any less sad to see our heroes wither. Once the action starts, it doesn’t stop and no one is safe. Favorites are going to fall and sometimes they don’t get the dignified death you want, but that’s what happens in all-out war. It’s dark and dreary and not the really the happy ever after young people may be seeking out.

The film itself is just fine. The acting really shines from everyone and that’s where the strength lies, because the story is mostly disappointing. It’s a truly interesting look at a rebellion, but it falls flat when it begins to amp up expectation. The biggest letdown is that Katniss doesn’t seem to be any part of the action, but the problem. I know we’ve been through a lot with our girl, but if we have to root for her shouldn’t  she have to earn it at least a little?
