Luc Besson is a very successful writer and director with a unique style and strong voice. He’s a wonderful storyteller who isn’t afraid to take risks. He’s written and directed films like The Fifth Element and last year’s Lucy and will be gracing us with his talents again in 2017 when he releases an exciting, live-action retelling of Valerian and Laureline, a French graphic novel series.
It was originally announced in 2012 that Besson would write and direct the project, but now news is coming out fast. Valerian, the film’s male protagonist, will be played by Dane Dehaan. Dehaan was the main player in Josh Trank’s Chronicle and played Harry Osborn in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Valerian also has a female sidekick by the name of Laureline who will be played by Cara Delevingne. Delevingne seems to be everywhere lately, gracing billboards as a model and she will be portraying Mermaid in the upcoming Pan and Enchantress in DC’s Suicide Squad. The film will follow the pair as they travel through time and space.
The original series was first published in 1967 by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières in French, but has since been translated into twenty one different languages and sold over ten million copies. The series follows Valerian and Laureline in the 28th Century when humans discovered that time travel was possible. The pair tackle adventures in space and through time.
The news was leaked via Besson’s personal Twitter account. In fact, they were Besson’s first ever tweets. The writer/director/producer extraordinaire also has a film, The Lake, which he cowrote with Richard Wenk coming out July 2016 starring J.K. Simmons and Sullivan Stapleton and is working on a martial arts film entitled Warrior’s Gate. Valerian, as it is officially titled, will be released July 21st, 2017 by EuropaCourt.
