Jonathan Nolan Has Massive Sci Fi Plans for HBO

There are two massive projects that one of Interstellar’s writers, Jonathan Nolan, is working on. Nolan is taking Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton’s critically acclaimed sci-fi western, Westworld, and Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, and bringing them to HBO.

Originally, Westworld was released in 1973 and was directed by Crichton. The film takes place in a futuristic, adult-themed theme park where a malfunctioning robot is beginning to cause big problems. Nolan and his wife, Lisa Joy, will write, as well as executive produce the series, and it’s coming from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. HBO has already ordered Westworld to series and reports are saying that some actors have already signed multiyear deals. That’s a big deal, because the cast list boasts some major names. Anthony Hopkins plays Dr. Robert Ford, the creator of Westworld, and his main nemesis will be played by Ed Harris. James Marsden, Thandie Newton, and Evan Rachael Wood will be playing androids that have the unique ability to die and respawn with totally different personalities. The show should hit the airwaves in 2015.

Also on Nolan’s list of to-dos is the well-loved Asimov series, winner of the Hugo Award for “Best All-Time Series” in 1966 and published from the years 1942 until 1993. So, we’re looking at a lot of content for even an HBO series. It seems to be quite the passion project for Nolan, who has been developing it in the shadows for months. In an interview with Indiewire, he proclaims his loud love for Asimov’s work, “I f*****g love the “Foundation” novels by Isaac Asimov —they’re certainly not unknown, but that’s a set of books I think everyone would benefit from reading. That’s a set of books where the influence they have is just f*****g massive; they have many imitators and many have been inspired by them, but go back and read those, and there are some ideas in those that’ll set your f*****g hair on fire.” There is little known currently about the series. There have been attempts to adapt the large collection of novels to film, but nothing has come to fruition. Hopefully, Nolan can conquer the vast challenge he’s set up for himself and the network.
