IRL: No Green Screen? No Problem!

Effects Magic Without A Green Screen

I’m quick to admit that I’m not the biggest authority on technological devices. Hardware, software, coding especially, I am not a detailed depository of relevant knowledge, but, even I understand how a green screen is a worthwhile device to have when one is making video content. Even on a small scale, like internet reviews, a more interesting background can add flavor to a creation.

And, while, to my knowledge, green screens are easy to acquire, some places and workspaces are not always conducive to putting up a large green wall. However, in these cases, you still want to manipulate the background—right?

Well, never say technology does not cater to people’s needs.

Fully Remove A Green Screen: Don’t Use One!

Now, I repeat, I’m not a big enough tech head to understand the nuances of this, but, the basic idea of the softwares that can do “background removal” is that you teach a computer what is there, and how you—the person in the video—look, and it works around you. I have yet to see a perfect effect that lasts more than a few inches of movement—you can get these annoying blur shadows—but, the result is you can do everything you can with a green screen.

And, if you’re interested in that, there are a few different products that allow such a thing (the video below features a few options). If you want to live-stream video games, or do movie reviews, or even—though I’m not sure the technology is quite up to the task yet—a short film with a lot of special effects: it’s a useful tool.

A Green Screen Is Not The Be-All End-All For Easy Visual Effects

And, believe me, in this world of content, any leg up is something worth knowing.
