A Hilarious Halloween Highlights Entry

I adore CliffSide so much. The animation and style of comedy are perfectly in line with my tastes. The focus on making monsters that are scary and threatening and disturbing, but still able to be shown to kids, is also totally in my bag—it’s one of the reasons I think Gravity Falls is so good.

This absolutely deserves as much attention as it can get. There are so many tiny flourishes in CliffSide that make the storytelling stronger. The animation is basic, a lot of the time, but they do so much with posture and hand gestures and facial reactions that you get a sense of these characters quickly.

And, shock of all shocks, the character I find the most fun and interesting is the spider demon girl. Somehow, they made a smile that consists of gnarly teeth exposed from a too-wide grin into something oddly adorable. The moment where she tries to take a bite of his finger but makes a cute little sound is where I knew that this character was going to be fun.

The action is also wonderful, fluid, and crunchy. Turns out four arms for shooting makes for some seriously impressive gunplay. The only place it falls apart is the camera’s weird propensity for jerking around for no reason. Sometimes it makes for fun added motion, to make stuff like falling out of the sky feel like more of a drop, but other times it just seems like the camera is being bumped for no real reason.

Regardless of that one little hiccup, and perhaps the style of humor not being funny for people who are sick of meta-humor, this is a series that I would binge immediately if any new content was released for it.
