…Sam, play it.
*Cue music.*
Let me tell you a story for a change.
One time, while Brandon Scott and I were having a drink, we got to talking about stories. Now, Brandon’s no stranger to writing them, so, when he told me that he disliked stories that started with a character waking up in bed, naturally, I asked him why. And he said: “It’s too easy. Too simple.” He took a quick sip and gave me this look. “Everyone wakes up, every day, it’s not special. It’s not interesting. Every story starts with people dead, dying, or waking up from some dream. It tells you nothing about the main character. Start in the middle of a heist. Start with them eating at their favorite restaurant even! Give me something unique.”
“Is that a hard and fast rule?” I asked him, curious.
“I mean, I guess not. I wrote ‘Sleep Well,’ and that’s all about dreams and stuff. I suppose it has its place. Being a writer does often involve breaking your own rules.”
“Can I see it? The readers might like it?”
Brandon smiled, looking away for a minute. He downed the rest of his drink. “Yeah, I suppose.”
He handed me a few pages. (You can read them by CLICKING HERE.)
“Thanks,” I said. “Same time next week?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world, Fictionmonger. I would not miss it for the world.”
…tuning out.
