Five Favorite Gadgets From The Dark Knight Rises

I have seen The Dark Knight Rises twice and have come to the conclusion that it is my favorite Batman to date. The story was brilliant, the action was non-stop, and Bane was the perfect choice for Batman’s final villain. However, while I love the story and characters, they are only part of the reason why I love the franchise. The other side of my love affair with Batman lies in all the gadgets. I geek out over the technology both Batman and the villains use in the movies, and am dying to get my hands on some of their gadgets. Where’s my Batmobile? Why can’t I have a utility belt full of goodies? I also want a key to Fox’s mind to see where he comes up with all of these amazing things.

Until then, I’ll just drool over some of my favorite gadgets from The Dark Knight Rises.

The Bat

Okay, this is the big one. The Bat is the newest form of transportation for Batman from Fox, and after eight years of seclusion this is without a doubt what I’d like to make my return in. The Bat is approximately double the size of the Tumbler, or Batmobile, and flies. It looks a little bit like a bug with its wings and tail that curves around the propeller. In the film, the Bat is mainly used as a get away vehicle when Batman finds himself out numbered. I do wish we saw more of The Bat in the movie because I feel like its equipment wasn’t showcased enough.

Piano Door

That name in no way is the correct term for what I’m actually talking about, but I couldn’t figure out a better way to describe it. Basically, I’m talking about the piano keys that Alfred used to open the secret doorway to the Batcave. I’m a sucker for secret doorways. Side story, one of my favorite hidden passageway scenes is in Young Frankenstein when Inga keeps picking up the candle that opens the door and Doctor Frankenstein keeps getting stuck in it. It’s a struggle picking which passageway leads to something cooler—Frankenstein’s lab or the Batcave. However, I have to give this one to Batman, because he has a platform that rises out of the water, so cool. The secret doorway is timeless, and therefore deserving of a spot on my list.

EMP Gun

My favorite gadget was the EMP gun that Batman used throughout the movie. The EMP gun basically generates an electromagnetic pulse that disrupts the programming of other devices within its shot range. Who knew electromagnetic waves were so powerful? Everyone except me, I guess. Students should be happy this device hasn’t gone mainstream yet, or else their days of using phones during class would be over.

Leg Brace

Once again, not the name of the actual device, but what I’m talking about does remind of the leg braces people put on to help them walk. In the Batcave, Batman puts on these leg braces before he leaves; however, they aren’t just any leg braces. Batman’s leg braces seem to have a bonus feature: super strength. Seriously, it allows his leg to cut through concrete like butter. Do all leg braces give that power? If so I want a pair.

The Mask

Although I wouldn’t want a mask of my own, it’s hard to deny that it is a very interesting piece of technology. The mask is very Vader-esque, in my opinion all it was missing was some heavy breathing. The mask Bane used in the movie was used exclusively for function, I believe, and allowed him to breath free of pain after he was injured helping Talia escape prison. However, in the comic books the mask was also used to pump the substance venom, a sort of super steroid, into his body. I’m a little upset that didn’t make it into the film, but we can’t have everything can we?
