E3’s Got Some Bumpin’ Trailers

So we’ve been going over the recent E3 trailers here at Sci-Fi Bloggers and it’s exciting what’ going on there. Here are some brief thoughts on the best ones and then *ahem* Editor’s Choice for Game of Show.

DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN

Detroit: Become Human  is the latest (probable) masterpiece from Quantic Dream. Their previous games, Heavy Rain, a murder mystery where, if one of your characters dies, the story adapts to their death and they stay dead, and Beyond: Two Souls, a beautiful, cinematic look at a world and reality far beyond (no pun intended) even its creator’s own ideas, were huge successes and they pushed the envelope in terms of storytelling in gaming. One of this Editor’s first articles, in fact, was a review of the latter. Now, the development team behind those creates something just as potent as its forerunners, if not more so.

Detroit‘s trailer is impressive because it shows us that cause-and-effect gameplay has the ability to be broadened to much higher degrees. My hope is that the whole game operates this way on not just this section (remember how Mass Effect ended?). All in all though, great trailer.

SPIDER-MAN

Spider-Man 2 (which I played on the Nintendo GameCube) was a huge success. It gave you the freedom to really feel like a superhero. And now, it’s looking like Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment America are about to give us back that freedom with the new Spider-Man, to be released on PlayStation 4. The game looks incredible graphics-wise, and there’s more to the story with that. It looks like something we can all have fun with, bearing a high degree of the realism and surrealism native to the Spider-Man franchise.

FRIDAY THE 13TH THE GAME

So this gets more surprising to me all the time. Friday the 13th the Game actually looks impressive. Perhaps it is designed rather stylistically (regarding visuals), but that only adds to the nature of the game, which intends to capture the spirit of the films on which it’s based. The game’s funding was raised entirely on Kickstarter and Backerkit and boy was that a successful action. It also boasts a unique multiplayer experience that reflects fun and scares as opposed to competition, which I rather like.

GOD OF WAR

Holy Christ. I didn’t think I’d be this into the God of War trailer, but wow, what incredible storytelling, and all done in-game. The story of Kratos and his son look to be a promising one, an epic journey not unlike The Walking Dead or The Last of Us, except, you know, with gods.

RESIDENT EVIL 7

Nope. Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope. Not this. Anything but this. But honestly, for horror gamers out there, this look terrifying. Resident Evil 7 takes the series back to its roots with a haunted house experience unlike most others. The trailer is absolutely chilling, but it also seems to have a sense of depth about it that should be fun to explore.

KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 FINAL CHAPTER PROLOGUE

Ah, Kingdom Hearts, the only game series that steers clear of the number “3” worse than, well, you know. (No, but some E3 footage was released in 2015 and it was pretty sweet.) That being said, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.9 Final Chapter Prologue (Super Saga 10 X5 Platinum Voice Edition) actually looks great. It features a high-definition remaster of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, and two new entries to the series. One of them, Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover, tells us a new part of the Kingdom Hearts story in HD cinematics, while the other, Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep–A Fragmentary Passage, gives us a short episode that takes place after the events of Birth by Sleep and is told from the perspective of Aqua, tying into Kingdom Hearts III in various ways.

STAR WARS

EA and various developers are working on a number of projects that are very, very interesting. I could sit here and describe them individually, but rather than do that, I’d like to give my brief thoughts on what’s occurring: EA is doing a lot. Maybe they’ll make up the damage they did with Mass Effect 3Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s launch (it’s obviously better now), and Dragon Age 2. I would like for them to do that. However, there next game is giving me mixed feelings about whether or not they will.

MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA

Okay, so Mass Effect: Andromeda‘s first trailer has been released, and honestly, it looks really good. But it looks really good, so all I have to say about this is that it had better actually be good. ME3 looked like a good conclusion to the Mass Effect trilogy. It was not one. The last ten to twenty minutes were the most disappointing section of a game I have ever seen. So yeah, let’s see BioWare. I’d love for you guys to win. Now we just have to watch what happens when your game is released.

EDITOR’S CHOICE – GAME OF SHOW: HORIZON ZERO DAWN

Guys, just watch that trailer. Damn, what a piece of work. Horizon Zero Dawn is the perfect mix of the freedom and adventuring of The Legend of Zelda and the tone, atmosphere and technology of XenobladeHalf-Life 2 and other similar sci-fi franchises. The characters and the various political motivations that are implied and expressed in this short preview are exactly what we need in gaming, and that’s why it’s my choice for Game of Show.

By the way, if the developers of this game are reading this, you’ve really done something awesome with this game. Always go up from here. There are infinite horizons to soar beyond. Here’s to yours.

That’s everything guys! Enjoy your day and check out other cool games that were shown at E3 2016 by clicking here.

Stories are important. Stories feed the mind and inspire the heart. They lift the spirit and challenge the imagination. They have the ability to predict what the future will be, and have the power to reveal the past in a light unseen before. Stories take people to worlds they thought never existed, worlds they thought couldn't exist. But they can, and they do. Stories make them a reality. Stories make them into truth. Don’t underestimate them (don’t tell me you haven’t before, we all have, even me). They are, collectively, the gateway to utopias, dystopias, kingdoms, planets and universes unlike anything on Earth—or, in some cases, all too much like Earth. Stories can wake people up from their brainwashed states and get them active in the world, doing things they wouldn't have had they not heard or read or seen them. Stories can save lives. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE STORIES, AND DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOUR ABILITY TO CREATE THEM.
