Horrid

It Came From The Archives! “Horrid Review: The Horrors Of Extreme Feelings”

0

By Brandon Scott on Apr 5th, 2023

Horrid is a book about emotions more than anything else. Its plot, its ending, its momentum are all in service of getting across big emotional moments.

Tantalus Depths

Tantalus Depths: Solid Sci-Fi Horror

0

By Brandon Scott on Mar 13th, 2023

Tantalus Depths is the kind of book that the right audience will love. It’s a solid combination of cosmic horror, somewhat-hard science fiction, and has sprinkles of space epic. And perhaps its biggest triumph is how it balances those three things in an organic, unfolding way that never feels like a hard genre shift.

The Girls Are Never Gone: Fast-Paced Scares

0

By Brandon Scott on Feb 22nd, 2023

The Girls Are Never Gone is an interesting blend of concepts attached to a traditional ghost story. From The Twisted Ones to Horrid to even aspects of Harrow Lake, I already knew this story’s bones.

An Ode To Tropes

0

By Brandon Scott on Feb 15th, 2023

When you become a diehard fan of a type of media or genre (really any of them), you notice patterns. I’ve spoken before about storytelling patterns in the wider construct of narratives, but what I mean this time is tropes.

The Twisted Ones

It Came From The Archives! “The Twisted Ones: Slow-Burn Nightmare”

0

By Brandon Scott on Feb 13th, 2023

I wish I had more nice things to say about The Twisted Ones. Given how impressed I was with The Hollow Places, I expected another creative cosmic horror with a breezy pace. And while I will ultimately have several nice things to say about the book, it’s a step down in quality.

Forward

It Came From The Archives: “The Forward Collection: Bits Of Sci-Fi Goodness”

0

By Brandon Scott on Jan 23rd, 2023

It was an accident that I found out about the Forward collection on Amazon Prime—but I’m so happy I did. Turns out, if you have Prime, it’s free, and each short story is interesting in its own way. There’s six in all, so I thought I’d cover my thoughts on each of these tales.

The Luminous Dead: A Polarizing Horror Descent

0

By Brandon Scott on Jan 3rd, 2023

The Luminous Dead is perhaps one of the hardest reviews I’ve done in a long time. The nature of the work has clashed with my usual operations.

A Retrospective Of 2022’s Best & Worst (Part 2)

0

By Brandon Scott on Dec 28th, 2022

Now it’s time for the negativity. The stuff I least enjoyed reviewing. I’ve sandwiched this part between two positive articles, so we don’t end this retrospective on a low note.

A Retrospective Of 2022’s Best & Worst (Part 1)

0

By Brandon Scott on Dec 26th, 2022

I’ve written many articles this year and reviewed piles of movies, tons of shows, and even a few books. And while a lot of media flees my memory once I’m done reviewing it, a few things were so good and memorable that they’ve stuck with me throughout the year. And in the same vein, some media pieces were so disappointing that I still wish for a better version.

Dark Harvest

Dark Harvest: A Scary Book That’ll Ruin Your Day

0

By Brandon Scott on Nov 28th, 2022

Dark Harvest is a novella from 2006 I oopsed into reading because I wanted something short and spooky for October—and then only finished it a few days ago. And now, having discovered that it’s getting a film adaptation that appears to be trapped in some bureaucratic/logistical hell and will come out eventually, it seemed a perfect book to give a review.

Praise For Extremely Short Art

0

By Brandon Scott on Sep 28th, 2022

Short Art Has A Different Vibe Than Other Projects I love long-form content: epic scope books, five-hour video essays, and sprawling television shows. I also love binging YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. So, today, we’ll talk about short media in a deliberately brief article. I’m talking really short media. Short stories like our own Friday…

American Elsewhere: A Scattershot Horror Tome

0

By Brandon Scott on Sep 21st, 2022

American Elsewhere resists review—because it’s massive. The paperback is 662 pages. That’s Stephen King tome levels. That’s epic fantasy size.
