CATCHING UP: Under the Dome – Season Two, Episode Six

First aired August 4th, 2014.

“Barbie” (played by Mike Vogel) and Sam (played by Eddie Cahill) explore the underground tunnel inside the high school looking for the crazy barber, Lyle (played by Dwight Yoakam). Junior (played by Alexander Koch) triggers a booby trap that causes a cave-in trapping the other two inside.

While looking for a way out Barbie questions Sam about his connection to Melanie (played by Grace Cox) and the murder of Angie (played by Britt Robertson). When Barbie notices the scratches on Sam’s shoulder he connects him to her death. This causes him to go on a tirade about how the Four Hands must die for the dome to come down and that unless he kills them everyone will slowly die under the dome. Sam tells Barbie that he would eventually have to kill the rest of them and jumps off a cliff to his apparent death.

The entire time Barbie was in the cave with Sam it was painfully obvious he was guilty, but Barbie still wasn’t getting it. It wasn’t subtle hints he was missing; everything about their conversations pointed to Sam being the murderer, but for effect Barbie couldn’t reach that conclusion too soon. Sam jumping into that chasm was such an anticlimactic end to his character, especially after he just started becoming relevant to the narrative. That being said, we didn’t actually see him die, so there is always the chance he survived the fall because that’s the rule of television. I think there was some kind of subtle hint that maybe Barbie will take over killing the Four Hands at some point, but that wouldn’t make any sense for his character.

Meanwhile, the latest dome weather disaster is a dust storm that could block the supply of air if it coats the walls of the dome. “Big Jim” (played by Dean Norris) uses this as an opportunity to gain favor with the townspeople after the issue of him trying to poison them. While initially they (rightfully) distrust him, everyone realizes how dangerous the storm is and works with him. Using a strategy drawn up by Rebecca (played by Karla Crome), Big Jim successfully stops the dust storm and tried to plant doubt about a certain someone’s ability to lead. Julia (played by Rachelle Lefevre), the person in question, was busy helping rescue Barbie from the cave-in, which he used as an example of her unfit leadership skills.

It’s amazing how Big Jim is always able to somehow find a way back into the good graces of everyone in town. There’s no way they are over him trying to poison everyone, but they are starting to warm up to him again. His attempt to discredit Julia was half-assed, which is either because of bad acting or bad writing. This trend of a new dome related issue for almost every episode is starting to wear thin. Just how many disasters can this thing cause? I want more episodes like the first season where there were character driven storylines and the dome was wasn’t involved.

Speaking of the Four Hands, Junior, Melanie, Joe (played by Colin Ford) and Norrie (played by Mackenzie Lintz) want to recover the egg from the lake to get some answers (’cause that’s worked out so well before). They join hands and it levitates out of the water, still glowing like it was before. When all four touch the egg, more pink stars come flying out but they don’t fall in lines (clue?). The stars form some kind of statue that Melanie recognizes from her hometown Zenith, which also happens to be Barbie’s hometown.

I really can’t take any more of these pink stars. They just keep falling but nothing comes from it. The big reveal last season about the stars was such a major disappointment and I’m not excited at all for what new mystery they have about this statue. Honestly I just want that stupid egg to hatch or get smashed open so we can put this whole storyline to rest. I hope at the very least this new set of stars leads to a more promising story development.

How many more weather disasters can this dome come up with?

I wonder if there are other generations of Four Hands that can keep replacing the new ones whenever one dies.
