Being Excited For The New Doctor Who Season

0

By Brandon Scott on January 13th, 2025

The Craving For More Doctor Who Has Not Slowed

Well, “Joy to the World” gave me a little more Doctor Who, but now I must wait, yet again. The new season won’t be starting for a while now—and all I’ll have is the trailers. Or, in this case, a teaser trailer. Which, as far as I can tell, just means it’s way shorter.

But that doesn’t mean there’s not already stuff I’m excited about. A few specific things, really. And we’ll be going over them now in fairly short order. Three things, specifically.

The most important one—likely—is the new companion. I love when a new companion shows up. It’s a chance for some new ideas to be injected into the personal life of the Doctor. I am holding out for a companion that isn’t from the modern day, though. I realize that would remove some of the grounding in reality that comes with an every-person character, but it’s not a dynamic we get all that often from the show. Maybe our newest will have some element of that.

The second thing is not going to be surprising for anyone who’s read a lot of my articles. I like cosmic horror. And Doctor Who has been leaning into evil gods lately—and this season promises yet more. The very first spoken line suggests that. And I have to imagine “Mr. Flood” is one of them. But, even if—and a line suggests he might—only The Toymaker returns, I’ll still be happy.

That said, the third thing suggests we’ll get a whole episode with a similar but different villain. There’s that frame of the rubber-hose cartoon character stepping out of the theater screen. And I can only imagine what god would cause something like that to happen. We’ve had Maestro overseeing music. Why not a different god overseeing art or drawings or even just a creativity god of some sort? As long as Doctor Who grounds its purely fantasy moments in the thin justification that these specific beings are just so advanced that they are using tech or biology we simply don’t understand, it doesn’t feel like we’re breaking away too much. And we still get to have creepy living drawings animated with good CGI. So, a win all around.

All we have to do is wait to get it. And wait some more. And, I’ll admit, writing this article did not make that feel any better. But that’s just the nature of being a fan, I suppose.
