Avengers: Endgame: A Historical Moment

Well, that’s the first Avengers: Endgame trailer. YouTube is going to keep losing its mind for a while. But, even if the first of the trailers, honestly, does not tell us much information about what’s going to happen, we can still talk about it.

The first thing I noticed is that Tony Stark is in one of the darkest scenes I’ve seen from him in a long time. The character is not a stranger to death, as Iron Man 3 partially dealt with him getting over his shock from the other time he nearly died, but the certainty in him this time is heartbreaking.

And we don’t even know for sure if Pepper Potts is alive.

And, further to the darkness, I’m pretty sure some more characters are permanently dying in this movie. Even if the Time Stone can undo most of the deaths, and save the newer characters, we are likely seeing someone go down.

Endgame Is Something New, Dark, And Brutal

The trailer says as much.

The Guardians are uncertain. Tony is uncertain. Peter Parker as Spiderman is maybe in jeopardy. I’m not even sure Captain America is going to survive this one.

This is shaking up to be one of the saddest Marvel movies.

Sure, they’ve already shown with Antman that they’re not going to have a completely bleak film. They have no choice, really. There’s no other way to make this movie kid-friendly than to dance around the fact of how many living things Thanos killed. It’s been confirmed the snap got animals. Maybe also plants? That’s traumatizingly dark.

Is It Endgame For One Of The MCU’s Best Villains?

And, what’s further interesting is that we don’t see Thanos—only his armor—in the first trailer. I’d be curious to see what Thanos has been up to since he became the biggest monster in the universe. And, hopefully, we’ll also see him punished for all he did.

A lot, and I mean a lot, of culture, is riding on this series. Marvel’s creations are more than simple films. Infinity War will be studied in film schools a hundred years down the road. As will likely Endgame. Endgame will determine where a huge chunk of other media is going—what type of stories they’ll tell—and what tone other creators and studios and directors will adopt while doing so. Marvel is an example others will follow. They already are.

I’m both terrified and excited about this new movie. I cannot wait to see it. But I also don’t want to watch Iron Man die.

And I think that’s happening. That’s my prediction.

But the only option for any of us is to stay tuned, cross our fingers, and hope this will all work out without too many reasons to burst into tears.
