At the end of 2016, it was expected that audiences would get another installment of James Cameron’s Avatar, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until late 2017 before we see any Na’vi on the big screen. Yes, Cameron’s sequel to mega smash hit, and highest-grossing film ever, Avatar has hit a snag. It seems the expected original release date was a bit ambitious for what the director/writer wanted to accomplish as he mentions in an interview, “We’re writing three simultaneously.”
Cameron has plans for three additional films, which he will film at the same time and release over three years. He’s leading a team of writers to craft all the scripts so that they mesh well together and don’t feel like stand-alone films. Cameron mentioned that he thinks the flow of each film is important, and that they should each move seamlessly to the next one while offering audiences a satisfying ending to each.
Avatar was released in 2009 and was considered a revelation in the spectrum of special effects. In fact, the movie took home three Oscars for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects and was nominated for a total of nine. The film follows Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, as he explores the moon of Pandora by operating an avatar meant to blend in with the moon’s inhabitants, the Na’vi. He begins a close relationship with one of them, Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana. Head of the Avatar Program is Dr. Grace Augustine who is a true ally to the Na’vi and source of inspiration for Jake, as played by the great Sigourney Weaver. Worthington, Saldana, and Weaver have signed on for possible sequels.
So eight years after the biggest film in history we’ll delve back into the Alpha Centauri star system…perhaps even further. Cameron says that they already have new creatures and environments for the sequels, so maybe we won’t be staying on Pandora. What about the Avatar Program? All humans, besides Jake (who was made a permanent member of the Na’vi and will sustain his avatar’s form) have been banned for Pandora, so what is left of what the title implies?
