A Monster Mash Up Worth Fighting For

Giant monsters normally don’t need any help to accomplish their city destroying, fire breathing rampages, but these do.  A Kickstarter for an ambitious monster mash up game is in the works, but it won’t see the light of day unless Kaiju fans unite and make it happen. Need convincing? Here are some reasons why Kaiju Combat is worthy of your time and money.

It’s being made by a team who is passionate about giant monsters beating the snot out of each other

Kaiju Combat is the baby of game developer Simon Strange, who has over 15 years of video game making experience. More importantly, of the many video games he’s worked on, three of them have been Godzilla games – Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee, Godzilla Save the Earth, and Godzilla Unleashed. Matt Frank, lead artist for the project, has written, drawn, and continues to work on IDW Comics’ ongoing Godzilla comic series. If that doesn’t make you qualified to make a giant monster beat em up, I don’t know what does.

Just like some of the Godzilla games Simon Strange has previously worked on, Kaiju Combat looks to be a 4 player brawler starting giant monsters. The idea of asymmetrical gameplay and interactive environments are two of the game’s biggest game design philosophies. Asymmetrical gameplay means that every monster has their own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities. Playing Godzilla well for example will be much different from playing a character like Rodan well, as their abilities and thus their strategies will differ greatly. Environmental interaction will also play a big role. As this is a giant monster game, expect the playing field to be utterly destroyed after your battle, and even use debris and buildings to help you defeat your opponents. Add four of these bad boys and screen at once, and you have an instant good time.

A giant host of new original monsters with the potential to add everybody’s favorite – Godzilla

Kaiju Combat is being developed with the idea of constantly adding new monsters and features with game updates and expansion packs. The core game will feature a slew of original monsters. With extra funding the developers will look to licensing the use of established monster franchises like Godzilla, Gamera, and Ultraman to provide and even larger roster for monster fans to use.  The long awaited fan battle between Godzilla and Gamera could finally come to life on your TV screen! A battle that Godzilla would win of course.

A rocking soundtrack to match the on screen destruction

Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, the lead guitarist for legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses, has signed on to provide a kick ass soundtrack for the game should the game reach its fundraising mark. Thal is a lifelong Kaiju fan, and his passion for the genre and killer guitar skills should make a great combination.

If Kaiju Combat is anything like the excellent Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee, it deserves some attention from not only giant monster fans, but also fighting game fans and gamers who want a fun party game to play. But it’s only going to happen if word about the project gets out and fans come together to support a great cause. Make it happen!
