A Look at Netflix’s Teen Drama Between

0

By Carly Fjeld on June 5th, 2015

Recently Netflix dropped another new series hoping to strike it big with a younger audience just as they have previously with Orange is the New Black and House of Cards. Check out the trailer for their teen sci-fi series Between right here.

The pilot episode is up and quickly jumps into the thick of the story as a town called Pretty Lake finds itself in and escalating situation of mass confusion. The sparsely populated town is experiencing an alarming rate of deaths of people over the age of 22 from a mysterious virus. The government decides to quarantine the entire town due to the fact that no one can figure out why it’s happening.

The introductions of characters are brief, but it’s because there’s a lot of ground to cover. Deaths keep occurring around our main characters, but we’re not familiar enough with them to care. It’s a common problem with pilot episodes. The characters are also a bit stale and awkward, but there are moments of depth and even some comedic relief. There’s still time for them to grow on us once they realize the gravity of their various situations. Hopefully, as we get more episodes, the stories will weave together more seamlessly. Right now it clunks around, but it’s intriguing enough that I’ll watch the next episode.

Which brings up another point. Netflix is trying a new format for the series. Between airs every Thursday in Canada on CityTV, thus every episode can’t be available on Netflix. So each Thursday an episode appears on CityTV and a few hours later it’s available internationally on Netflix.

The show was created by Michael McGowan, best known for his film Saint Ralph, who also directs. Will you be tuning in? Do you prefer the one episode a week or is binge watching more your style?
