The Hoverboard Is Here! Now What?

0

By Carly Fjeld on December 12th, 2014

It’s here, and it’s real! The hoverboard is HERE!

Not too long ago, an architect named Greg Henderson came up with the technology to make Marty McFly’s awesome way of transport possible. He was researching ways to make buildings safer during earthquakes and stumbled on the idea for the hoverboard. He hopes the technology can find other uses, too. “The idea came from being able to levitate buildings out of earthquakes. All of the patents I was looking at were for moving objects. So I asked, why is that? If I can levitate a train, why not a house? We want to use the Hendo hoverboard and hover engines as a way to capture attention and bring attention to an important topic. Our responsibility is to help figure out a better way to build.” Here’s the video for its Kickstarter.

Now that science fiction’s dreams are coming true, what do we need next? There’s a million things I can think of just off the top of my head, so I’m going to name five that aren’t as obvious. Of course we want to teleport, invent a time machine, and construct our own lightsaber that glows mint green (just me?), but what else from the world of sci-fi and fantasy would be useful?

1. A Neuralizer from Men in Black. The power to erase memories in the palm of your hand? Yes, please.

2. Invisibility Cloak from Harry Potter. A super cute throw by day, and a brilliant companion for the night. You could get in anywhere!

3. Universal Translator Technology from Star Trek. I’m talking like the “hold it to your throat and your speech is translated instantly” version. That could give you a huge advantage in the professional world.

4. The Point of View Gun from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. This is the easy way to read someone’s mind. You also enable yourself to take on unique perspectives and allow personal growth through understanding.

5. The Sonic Screwdriver from Doctor Who.Sure this one seems obvious, too, but I need it. Unlock all doors, repair all the things, and escape any situation, no matter how sticky!

What did I miss? What gadgets would you want?
